A Study on the Design Analysis of Hair By Night design(I) Style(1) - Focusing on the Color Design -

The objective of this study was to analyze the yearly changes in color techniques and trends in the hair piece design of award winners in national and international hair by night competitions. For this study, a total of 172 works were extracted from monthly beauty magazines dated from January of 2000 to December of 2014 and from the book collection of the Korea Central Beauticians Association. Content analysis was performed according to classification method. The major findings were as follows: The analysis of the coloring techniques, the number of color matches, the stages of color changes of hair by night revealed that monotone coloring techniques using bleaching and dyeing were popular in Period 1, while coloring techniques seeking a variety of colors using acid coloring after bleaching and dyeing became more common in Period 2 and afterward. The number of colors used stood at mainly three in Period 1, but more than four colors were often used starting with Period 2. Regarding the stages of color changes, various colors started to appear from Period 2 compared to Period 1, and changes to dark colors from light colors increased strikingly despite the fact that the direction of the change was opposite in Periods 1 and 2. Based on the analysis, the design changes of hair by night can be summarized as follows. From Period 2, a new trend increasingly emphasizing natural and light feelings appeared. The color also highlights techniques to connect vivid colors and short and light curves in later periods. Moreover, dye colors changed from monotone colors such as yellow or brown to gradient colors such as red, orange, or yellow-orange.
