A collaborative creative work on “taishi,” a type of Japanese verse, has recently been made by two representative poets in Korea and Japan, Kyung-rim Shin and ShuntaroTanikawa. The aim of the present article is twofold as follows. Firstly, we explore the process of literary communication between the two figures through the analysis of “taishi.” Based on the exchange with each other and on the contemporaneity of topics (a feature of “taishi”), we claim that the poetic work reflects each poet’s world of poems in terms of diction and topics. For instance, given the current state of the world where disputes continuously occur, Shin addresses “humans’ indifference towards the god” whereas Tanikawa addresses the humans’ reliance on something (even though they are not religious). Furthermore, the poets felt the sense of humans’ helplessness and suffered a setback as a result of the Sinking of MV Sewol, and their attempt to comfort, and sublimate, those who were involved in this incident can be read into their collaborative work. Secondly, we analyze the similarities of the poetic world of Shin and that of Tanikawa. Their worlds are paralleled in that they share “the rudimentary sense of loss,” or the feeling of having left something behind in the past or in the world of their previous existence. Moreover, their latest work, which features death or “the next world,” addresses near-death experiences in which people go back and forth between the present world and “the next world.” These observations shed light on a new possibility of “taishi” as a means of literary communication and creation.
