Hypernasality is a parameter of cleft palate speech that has been studied by many clinicians and speech pathologists. It appears to be a primary and secondary symptom of speech disorders in communication. Generally, the degree of hypernasality has been assessed by the listener s judgement, but perceptual assessments have poor scientific reliability, so objective instruments have been needed to test hypernasality with diagnostic accuracy. This study was analyzed the nasalance score using a Nasometer for cleft palate patients. The simple vowels-/a/, /i/, /e/, /u/- and the approximants-/j/, /w/- were tested for the degree of hypernasality after palatorrhapy and pharyngoplasty. The phrases containing long and short duration times were used in this study to assess hypernasality. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The author proposes that the diagnostic sampling vowels are effective to test the high vowel-/i/(55,5% nasalance)- and to test the low vowel-/a/ (20,75% nasalance)-. 2. The degree of hypernasality according to the nasalance ratio is classified as. follows: i) no nasal passage(0-20%) ii) mild nasal passage(20-25%) iii) high nasal passage(35-50%) iv) severe nasal passage(over 50%) 3. Furthermore, phrases containing no nasal consonants are effective in assessing mild hypernasality. 4. Fiberoptic views shows the open velopharyngeal port that resulted in hypernasality of cleft palate patients.
