Autogenous cartilage grafts are recently used in plastic and reconstructive surgery, especially auricular cartilage grafts are widely used in replacement of temporomandibular joint disc. Cartilage grafts itself has a high survival rate after grafting and I needs a low metabolic rate. We compared the viability, adhesion and foreign body reactions with the autogenous or allogeneic auricular cartilage grafts in cases of disc resection in rabbit temporomandibular joint. Routine histopathologic findings has performed at 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks postoperatively. The results were: 1. Grafted auricular cartilage in articular disc was surrounded by fibrous tissue without bone resorption or new bone formation. Inflammatory findings and hemorrhages were more prominent in allogeneic groups than in autogenous groups at 1 and 2 weeks, but after 4 weeks each group had no differences. 2. Degeneration of grafted auricular cartilage was prominent in II allogeneic groups till 2 weeks, but after 4 weeks each group had no differences. 3. Vascular proliferations and fibroblastic proliferations around the grafted auricular cartilage showed more activities in autogenous groups than allogeneic groups at 1, 2 and 4 weeks. 4. Much more additional growth of the marginal area of the grafted auricular cartilage was revealed in autogenous groups at 1, 2 and 4 weeks respectively.
