This is a retrospective study of the patients who had undergone microsurgical reconstruction of the nerve defects using the greater auricular nerve and the sural nerve in the oral and maxillofacial region. The purpose of the study is to evaluate functional recovery of the motor and sensory nerve after autogenous nerve graft. Among 17 patients, inferior alveolar reconstruction was performed in 8 patients, lingual nerve reconstruction in 1 patient, facial nerve reconstruction in 2 patients, accessory nerve reconstruction in 6 patients were conducted. 8 patients were grafted with the greater auricular nerve and 9 patients were grafted with the sural nerve. 8 patients undergone reconstruction of the motor nerve had recevied physical therapy as early as possible and the muscle activities were checked with EMG postoperatively till functional recovery was achieved. 9 patients undergone reconstruction of the sensory nerve were followed up and the process in which the function of the nerve had been recovered gradually were observed. As for recovery of the sensory nerve, Tinel s sign appeared 2nd-3rd month after surgery and pain sensation appeared 3rd-4th month after surgery and touch sensation appeared 4tj-5th month after surgery. As for recovery of the motor nerve, improvement of electromyographic activities appeared in 2md to 4th month after surgery. Satisfactory muscle function was recovered in 6 month to 1 year after surgery.
