Over the past 35 years, autogenous bone and cartilage has been the preferred grafting materials for reconstruction in facial area and has been superior to all other osseous grafting materials. However, donor site morbidity, limited quantities, increased operative time, postoperative pain and complications of autogenous bone graft seek out different graft materials for oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Allogeneic bone graftes, also known homologous grafts or allografts, are grafts form another individuals within the same species. Because the individuals are usually genetically dissmilar, the graft must be treated by various methods to reduce antigenicity. Among these methods for long preservation and storage, freeze-drying and demineralization seem to offer the most acceptable alteratives. As the need for preserved tissue allografts continue to increase, the requirement of banked allogeneic bone grafts will be increased. The purpose of this paper is to report clinical cases using banked allogeneic bone graft, prepared from Wonkwang Bone Bank, and to review the clinical sequelae of patients in order to discuss indications, contraindications, advantages, disadvantages, complications and perspectives for the future advances of Banking Procedures in Korea.
