Review of the healing mechanism of maxillary antrum after caldwell-luc operation and the case report of recurrent oroantral fistula after caldwell-luc operation with oroantral fistula closure

After Caldwell-Luc operation, the antral cavity becomes obliterated gradually by granulation tissue and, in turn, fibrous tissue. The amount of obliteration depends upon the rate of growth of the epithelium from the natural ostium and antrostomy site into the maxillary sinus cavity. Eventually the largest part of the sinus cavity is obliterated, leaving a small medial air containing space well exteriorized to the nasal cavity by the antrostomy and possibly by the natural ostium. By the principle above, the authors treated the patient with recurrent oroantral fistula who was cared by Caldwell-Luc operation and nasal antrostomy with oroantral fistula closure. The result was good without recurrence of oroantral fistula and sinusitis.
