This is a clinical study of short-term functional recovery after open reduction of the mandibular fracture, by reviewing recent results of84 patient s follow-up for at last 8 weeks after open reduction in Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery of Wonkwang University Hospital from Feb., 1990 to Mar., 1991. The results were obtained as follows: 1. There are no relationship between mouth opening capacity and each age groups of patients. 2. Rigid fixation with plate and screw may be available for shortening of IMF periods. 3. There are obvious mouth opening difficulty when preoperative IMF period were longer that 10 days, but the short IMF periods have a fast normal mouth opening process. 4. Mouth opening capacity were recovered normally within 8 weeks after postoperative IMF removal in mandibular fractures, but except condyle fractures. 5. Mouth opening capacity were recovered normally within 8 weeks after postoperative IMF removal in 60% ratio of simple condyle fractures. 6. Both condyle fractures were seen obvious mouth opening difficulty with an average of 29mm in 8 weeks after release of postperative IMF. 7. In condyle fractures, mouth openings of Level Ⅲ, Ⅳ were more sensitive than that of Level Ⅰ, Ⅱ.
