Experimental study on the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the healing process of mandibular osteomyelitis in albino rats

The main objective of this study was to observe the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the healing process of mandibular osteomyelitis in Albino rats. Author was able to produce the experimental osteomyelitis by formation of bone hole into the medullary cavity, cauterization of inferior alveolar vessel and insertion of containing 2.5-3.0 × 10⁷ organisms of Staphylococcus aureus. Author used 60 rats (Sprague - Dawley Strain) dividing into control (30) and experimental group (30) after establishment of mandibular osteomyelitis. Experimental group received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (2 hrs. daily at 2.5 ATA, 6 days a week) and effects of HBO therapy was observed by microscopically and bone scanning using 99mTc-MDP. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Microscopically, the experimental group showed significant decreasing tendency of inflammation, in which at the 2nd week, decreased infiltration of inflammatory cells and active proliferation of fibroblasts, at the 3rd week, loss of pus discharge were observed, while the control showed continuing severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and pus discharge. 2. Microscopically, the experimental group showed moderate proliferation of capillary blood vessels at the 1 st week, mild new bone formation and granulation tissues with active proliferation of capillary blood vessels at the 2nd week, and after then, continuing proliferation of capillary blood vessels, which findings seemed to have intimate relationship with local increased uptake of radioisotopes. 3. The static image of the bone scan demonstrated that the average radioactivity ratios have slowly increasing pattern during the whole experimental period in the control group, while in the experimental group, steep increasing pattern until the 3rd week, after then, rather decreasing pattern than in the control group.
