The purpose of this experimental study is to observe the healing process of the damaged articular cartilage after removal and replantation of the mandibular condyle. In order to carry out this experiment, 18 rabbits weighing about 2.0㎏ were selected and operated as follows. Under the general anesthesia with thiopental sodium, the condylar processes were removed out from the experimental animals via horizontal osteotomy of ramus with a #700 fissure bur, and replanted to its original site after partial resection of articular cartilage with a #700 fissure bur. The experimental animals were sacrified on the day of operation, 1st week, 2nd week, 4th week, 6th week after operation, and the mandibular rami were dissected out carefully to take the bony specimens. The specimens were fixed with 10% formalin solution for 24 hours and rinsed with phosphate buffer solution. Those were decalcified with 5% nitric acid for 15 days. Thereafter the specimens were sectioned in 4-6㎛ with microtome, stained with hematoxylin-eosin stain and Koneff stain, and observed through microscopic study. The results were as follows. 1. The damaged condylar heads were healed to normal shape through endochondral bone formation macroscopically after 4 weeks of operation. 2. The proliferation of cartilage zone was began at 4th week of operation in the articular defects, and the histologic pattern was similar to the control group at 6th week of operation. 3. In the condylar fracture, the articular cartilage must be remained as possible, and the condylar remodeling was guided through continuous functional therapy.
