The author has undertaken clinical studies on infections in the oral and maxillofacial regions by analyzing 1,212 patients among 4,980 in-patients hospitalized in the Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital past 9 years 7 months from January, 1980 to July, 1989. And bacterial cultures and antibiotics sensitivity tests were performed in 73 cases and the comparative analysis of the antibiotics was done. The results obtained were as followings: 1. The frequency of in-patients with infections of oral and maxillofacial regions was 1,212 among 4,980 which was 24.4%. 2. It occupied odontogenic maxillary sinusitis(38.7%), jaw osteomyelitis (26.3%), and abscess(20.3%) in the orders. 3. The 64 cases were cultured positively among 73 cases. 4. There was 53 cases(82.8%) of single infection and 11 cases(17.2%) of mixed infection among 64 cases. 5. There was total 75 strains which was equivalent 1.2 strains per specimen. 6. Gram-positive facultative cocci was the most isolates as 50 strains (66.7%). 7. Antibiotics sensitivities on the total isolated bacterial strains were shown Chloramphenicol(87.3%), Erythromycin(86.3%), Cephalothin(85.7%) in the orders, but it showed resistant on Methicillin(48.0%), Gentamicin(44.6%), and Tetracycline(34.9%). 8. Antibiotics sensitivities on Streptococci were shown Cephalothin(100.0%), Chloramphenicol(100.0%), Lincomycin(97.1%), Erythromycin(94.1%), Penicillin G(88.2%) in the orders, but it showed resistant in Gentamicin(55.9%), Methicillin(52.9%), Tetracycline(47.1%). 9. Antibiotics sensitivities on Staphylococci were shown Cephalothin(100.0%), Chloramphenicol(69.2%), Methicillin(69.2%) in the orders, but it showed resistant in Penicillin G(92.3%), Ampicillin(84.6%), and Tetracycline(53.8%).
