A study of several gargling agents on normal oral microbial flora

There are many microorganisms in the oral cavity. In addition to systemic administration of antibiotics, mouth-rinsing is a supplemental method to control the intraoral infections like local topical application. This study involved 15 dental students who have not systemic disease, prosthodontics, periodontitis, pericoronitis. They were divided into 3 groups that involved control group gargled with normal saline and the other experimental groups gargled with 1.5% Benzydamine HCl or 7.5% Polyvinylpyroliodine. 5, 30, 60minutes after mouth-rinsing we investigated with quantitative analysis of microorganisms in the oral cavity. The results were as follows : 1. After mouth-rinsing, the microorganisms were reduced in all three groups. 2. The effect of mouth-rinsing to reduce the microorganisms in highest quantitative change in the polyvinylpyroliodine group. 3. In the quantitative change of microorganisms, the highest reduction rate was presented at 5 minutes after mouth-rinsing. 4. In qualitative change of oral microorganisms with mouth-rinsing, we cannot found significant difference in all three groups.
