Incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate at the ewha university hospital in seoul

The author reviewed 22,714 live births and 21 infants with cleft lip and/or cleft palate born at Ewha University Hospital for 10 years from Jan. 1975 to Dec. 1984. The following results were obtained; 1. The incidence of cleft lip and/or cleft palate was 21 per 22,714 births; 1:1,082. 2. The birth rate of cleft lip: cleft palate: cleft lip & palate was 1: 0.8: 2.4 (24%: 19%: 57%). 3. Males were affected more frequently in total number of clefts and cleft lip & cleft palate by 2 times, but females had higher incidence in cleft palate than males by 3 times. 4. The incidence by the birth rank was higher in 2nd-borne group (1: 935) than in 1st-born group(1: 1,750). 5. The incidence by the maternal age was higher in 27 ~ 29-year-group (1: 698) than in 24 ~ 26-year-group(1: 1,206). 6. 24% of cleft lip and/or cleft palate patients had associated congenital anomalies. 7. 43% of cleft patients had deleterious prenatal history during the 1st trimester, but the family history was negative.
