The purpose of this study is to determine the fascicular characteristics of the human inferior alveolar nerve. This study was based on the inspection of 8 human inferior alveolar nerves. We prepared the nerve slides by conventional method to calculate the number of fascicles and measure the cross-sectional fascicular area. The results obtained were as follows; 1) The fascicles of the human inferior alveolar nerve did not appear to follow any order but, were in a totally random arrangement. 2) The mean number of the fascicles is 6-8. 3) There was a significant decrease in cross-sectional fascicular area as the distal portion of nerve was approached. 4) The ratio of cross-sectional fascicular area to fascicalar number did not change significantly along the nerve. 5) We could observe the well-developed perineurial vascular net of the inferior alveolar nerve. From the above results, we could recommend that the epineural or group fascicular sutures are preferred to the perineural suture in the inferior alveolar nerve.
