STUDY ON THE OSTEOMYELITIS OF THE JAWS

The authors studied that the nature of osteomyelitis of jaws to obtain some useful for diagnosis and treatment plan. Study materials used were 91 patients with osteomyelitis of jaws treated at the Dept. of Oral Surgery, Kyung Hee University Medical Center. Data including sex, age, etiology, causing teeth, affected area, clinical symptoms, radiologic fidings, treatment method and bacteriologic examination were collected and analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. Sex predilection was not, but more frequently involved in male (5:4) and most frequently involved in order 3rd, 2nd and 4th decades. 2. The most etiologic factor was odontogenic infection (87%), and 30% were in mandibular 1st molar, 19% were in 2nd and 3rd molar. 3. The most frequently clinical mainifestation was swelling (26.8%), and tenderness (14.6%), pain (13.4%), mouth opening limitation (11.1%), and neurologic symptoms (10.0%) were occured. 4. The incidence of osteomyelitis was 85 cases in mandible and 6 cases in maxilla. And most frequently involved area in order body, angle, and ramus area in mandible. 5. In the radiologic findings of osteomyelitis, cortical bone destruction was most seen, and sequestra formation, sclerosis, and subperiosteal new bone formation were seen. 6. The most causing organism was alpha-streptococci, and staphylococcus aureus, and epidermis were observed in orderly. 7. The most surgical treatment was incision and drainage (52.7%), and curettage, extraction, sequestrectomy were done.
