Kotoconazole is a new systemic antifungal compound which is active by the oral route against superficial and systemic infections with Candida albicans. In this study, the author investigated the minimal inhibitory concentration of ketoconazole on C. albicans isolated from oral cavity and observed electron microscopically the ultrastructual changes of C. albicans which were acquired resistance against ketoconazole. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of ketoconazole on C. albicans were 0.39㎍/㎖ in 20 strains (55.6%) and 0.19㎍/㎖ in 7 strains (19.4%), but even 50.0㎍/㎖ in 3 strains (8.3%) among 36 strains of Candida albicans. 2. The ultrastructual changes of acquired resistant C. albicans were observed as follows: (1) The shapes of cells showed horse-shoe shape, cone shape, rectangular shape and other abnormal shapes. (2) The cell wall became irregularly thickened and disruptured. (3) The dense veiscular structure accumulated in the cell wall. (4) The cell membrane was relaxed from the cell wall. (5) The cell membrane was disruptured and lyzed. (6) Many lipid droplets were increased in the cytoplasm. (7) Incomplete cell division was observed.
