The greatest danger to a nerve anastomosis lies in the connective tissue proliferation at the point of stitching. One of the most injurious factors developing new connective tissue is the tension upon the suture line. In this animal experiments, effects of tension at suture site on nerve regeneration were studied. The inferior alveolar nerves (IAN) of the rabbits were used, which divided into 4 groups under varing conditions as follows. Group 1: Sharp cutting the IAN without suture. Group 2: Sharp cutting the IAN with perineurial suture. Group 3: Resection of IAN about 3 ㎜ without suture. Group 4: Resection of IAN about 3 ㎜ with perineurial suture under tension. Histological studies were made at 10 weeks after surgery, and the results were then as follows, 1. The regeneration of axons on the distal nerve stump in group 1 and 2 was better than in group 3 and 4. 2. The regeneration of axons in group 2 was better than in group 1, but that in group 4 was not better than in group 3, so we concluded that the considerable tensile force upon the suture line causes connective tissue proliferation on the suture site and limits the axon regeneration.
