The ranula is a form of a retention cyst which specifically occurs in the floor of the mouth in association with the duct of the submaxillary or sublingual gland. The simple ranula, which results from the obstruction of ducts, is a true retention cyst of the numerous salivary glands that lie in the submucosal layers of the lining of the oral cavity. The plunging ranula, which produced by the mucous extravasation mechanism, extends beyond the mucous membrane of the oral cavity into the floor of the mouth and into the fascial planes of the neck. Plunging ranulas provide a greater challenge in both diagnosis and treatment. We experienced a case of the plunging ranula from the floor of the mouth and the base of the tongue, and are going to report dealing with a literature review.
