532 patients who were admitted to department of oral & maxillofacial surgery from July 1983 to September 1984 and operated on were studied clinically and statistically about the early complications of surgical procedures and the following results were obtained. (1) Of 540 operations, the frequent complications are abrasion and laceration of lip and oral mucosa (51.1%, 27.2%), ecchymosis (37.0%), paresthesia (34.6%), massive accumulation of bacterial plaque (29.3%), sorethroat (28.9%), and persistent postoperative bleeding and oozing (9.4%), postoperative infection (2%), malunion (0.9%), nonunion of suture (1.3%). (2) After intraoral surgery, abrasion and laceration of lip and oral mucosa (59.3% and 32.3% respectively) are more frequent compared with extraoral surgery. And paresthesia, hematoma, excessive swelling, ecchymosis were also more frequent in intraoral surgery. The other complications showed no significant difference in frequency. (3) 57 patients (10.7% of total) with systemic diseases didn t show any related postoperative complications. The reason of this could be the presurgical control of systemic disease through consultation of pertinent medical department.
