The study was undertaken to investigate oral epithlium in terms of their keratinizaion and morphological changes in two groups of people: smokers and non-smokers. The investigator studied the epithelial cells on the buccal mucosa and palate of 116 smokers and 53 non-smokers by means of exfoliative cytology using the papanicolaou staining method. The results were as follows: 1) In the buccal mucosa and palate, increased keratinization was found in smokers when compared to non-smokers in each age group. 2) The keratinization of oral epithelium was found to increase in proportion to the number of cigarettes smoked: while the presence of normal epithelial cells was found to decrease. 3) the keratinization of oral epithelium varied in proportion to the duration of cigarette smoking. 4) Buccal mucosa was found to be significantly different between the persons who smoked and those who didn t while palatal mucosa was not. 5) The nulcear and cytoplasmic appearance of oral epithelial cells was not significantly different between smokers and non-smokers.
