The purpose of this study is to observe the vital tissue response in applying some suture materials to oral mucosa. For the study, 18 rabbits, Weighing around 2kg were divided into 6 groups. Under the secobarbital anesthesia, 30mg per kg body weight, the suture materials,: Polyglycolic acid, Silk, Nylon, were implanted to submucosal layer of buccal mucosa, using 3/8 circle, atraumatic round needle paralleling regular distance. To embed the sutures in the tissue completly, they were cut shorter than the length of mucosa that the needle passed through. After the operation on, 1st, 4th, 7th, 14th, 21s1, 28th day, the each experimental animal group was sacrificed and taken the tissue containing the suture material were fried in 10% neutral formalin solution, embedded in paraffin, and serial sectioned to 6μ, mounted on glass slide and stained with the method of hematoxylin and eosin stain. In light microscopic examinations, following results were obtained: 1. Polyglycolic acid suture material elicited minimal tissue response and Silk was the worst tissue response 2. In all experimental groups, adjacent to the suture material, fibrous tissue capsulation with capillary proliferation was found, and fibroblastic tissue ingrowth was noticed to the suture tract. 3. Polyglycolic acid was begin to absorb on 14th day, and more resorbed on 28th day. 4. Inflammatory reaction of Polyglycolic acid, Sill & Nylon was the most severe in 4th day, more decreased slowly there after.
