북한 이탈 주민 대학생의 북한말 및 사회언어적 배경을 활용한 영어 교수법 활용 연구

Teaching English using North-Korean defectors mother-language and socio-linguistic backgrounds

본 연구는 북한 이탈 주민 학습자(이하 탈북 학습자)들의 모국어인 북한어 배경을 활용하여 영어를 가르친 후, 학습자 영어능력과 선호도 향상에 기여하였는지 고찰한 연구이다. 한국어적 표현과 의미가 아닌 북한어 식 어휘와 표현을 활용하여 뜻을 이해시킨 후 영어를 가르치는 학습자 모국어와 사회언어적 특성을 고려한 교수법 프로그램을 개발하여 3인의 교수자가 주 1회 - 75분, 15주간 교수하였다. 중학교 2학년 수준의 어휘와 문법을 활용한 사전ㆍ사후 시험을 통해 학습자 영어능력 향상을 살펴보았으며, 영어 선호도 변화는 참여관찰기록 및 사전ㆍ사후 설문과 인터뷰를 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 아래와 같다. 첫째, 북한 이탈 주민 학습자의 모국어 및 사회언어적 지식을 활용한 영어 프로그램은 탈북자 영어 학습에 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 영어능력 부족으로 한국 사회 정착에 곤란을 겪고 있는 탈북 학습자들이 사회언어적ㆍ문화적 스키마 활용 후 어휘, 문장 습득, 말하기, 쓰기 능력의 향상이 일어났다. 끝으로 본 프로그램은 학습자가 가졌던 영어에 대한 두려움을 긍정적 호감으로 바꾸는 데 기여하였다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 탈북 학습자들의 한국 교육과정 적응에 도움을 주어 영어 학습의 긍정적 언어 자아실현을 돕고자 하였다. 소수에 대한 질적 연구이므로 본 교수법의 실효성을 입증할 수 있는 후속 연구의 필요성 또한 제기된다.

This study developed an English teaching program and methodologies designed to improve North-Korean defectors (hereafter language learners) preferences and performances for English, using their mother-language and socio-linguistic backgrounds. A total of seven language learner participants enrolled at one of the universities in Seoul participated in this program and reported their opinions through interviews. The three researcher-participants observed learners performances in accordance with learners socio-linguistic language backgrounds and analyzed their achievements in the pre-post tests. The results portrayed that some learners improved their preferences and performances for English while the others did not. Their willingness and frequency of participating in the program were most important factors to cause the diversified preferences and performances. Further studies regarding how this type of program would motivate North-Korean defectors to learn English more actively are suggested. Pedagogical implications of enhancing North-Korean Defectors abilities of speaking and writing English were additionally presented.
