The difficulties and improvements of extensive reading in an elementary after-school program: Design-based research

  • 540

The purpose of this study is to improve an elementary after-school extensive reading (ER) program by identifying and solving problems. The researchers ran the ER program for two semesters with 12 students of fourth to sixth grades and conducted the design-based research, particularly, following the three-step process (Plomp, 2013). The data were qualitatively collected and triangulated through observations, interviews, and book reports. The data analysis revealed problems throughout the first semester: students difficulties in selecting books, practicing silent reading, and writing book reports. The difficulties arose from two factors, lack of self-directedness and linguistic knowledge in reading. Based on the literature reviews and the findings, the researchers redesigned the program as follows. First, the book selection guideline and guidance were provided to the students. Second, language input activities were added in each reading stage. The book report worksheet was also revised by including easier tasks. On the second semester, the participants enjoyed new vocabulary activities, felt they learned better, and selected and reported books more successfully although they still found silent reading to be difficult.
