Linguistic Anomaly of The BFG and its Translation

Building upon previous research on linguistic anomaly and translation studies, this paper examines the anomalous features of Roald Dahl s The BFG and illustrates how they are tackled in English-Korean translation. Linguistic anomaly is a deviation from the norm: it is a kind of “paradox” or textual double bind; it is both free and constrained; it tells the reader to abide, and not to abide, by the rules of language. This makes St. Jerome s widely accepted maxim “non verbum e verbo, sed sensum exprimere de sensu” (not word for word, but sense for sense) unfit in the translation of Dahl s work, which uses a wide range of anomalous devices to offer awkward, fresh, and unexpected images―even humor. Hence, the translator should have a clear understanding of the values that source text anomaly possesses and attempt to retain and recreate the value in target text. This study classifies linguistic anomaly into four categories―lexicon, pun, grammar, and idiom. For each category, this paper illustrates and evaluates how and whether the target text reproduces parallel value, thereby transferring the source text readers feeling of awkwardness and enchantment and eventually reviving the BFG as well as Dahl s imaginary and pleasant world.
