Selectional Properties of Predicates and Problems Translating Korean into English

In this paper I have looked into the problems of translating Korean into English that may arise due to the differences in selectional properties of adjectival predicates between Korean and English. Likely type adjectives of English have different selectional properties fromprobable type adjectives, whereas the Korean equivalents of English adjectives do not show any difference in selectional properties. Also tough type adjectives have different selectional properties from essential type adjectives although theymay appear to be of the same type in subcategorization patterns, whereas Korean adjectives which are equivalent to English adjectives have the same selectional properties. If interpreters and translators do not know the differences in the selectional properties of adjectival predicates which appear to be of the same type, they will make errors translating Korean into English. I have argued that to avoid such errors Korean-into-English interpreters and translators need to understand the differences in selectional properties of adjectival predicates. I have also argued that Korean translation schools must include linguistic courses in their curriculum so that students can learn about the syntactic properties of various predicates which play an important role in proper sentence formation.
