Translation Errors and Teaching Methods in English Causative Constructions

The purpose of this paper is to study the lexical meanings and complement types of three causative constructions, have, make and let. These verbs are called syntactic causative verbs. They have different complements such as bare infinitives, infinitives with to , past participles, present participles as well as adjectives or nouns. In general, verbs select the syntactic complements according to their unique properties and have diverse meanings in the context. Causative constructions can select a variety of complement types. They have slightly different meanings. However, most of Korean students translate causative constructions of English into Korean without noticing their proper meanings. I compare their exact meanings and analyze the complement types of the three causative verbs, have, make and let
