Blended Learning for Project-Based Translator Training: Design Proposals

Many private and public organizations are carrying out their projects\ that involve large-scale project-based translations. Against this backdrop, translators are required to be equipped with the competence to work as a project member. This study considers eight factors: i) identification of learner competence; ii) setting of standards for learning contents and period; iii) recognition of various learning types; iv) utilization of learning methods; v) collaboration for the accomplishment of learning objectives; vi) demonstration of learning; vii) preparation for follow-up measures; and vii) establishment of monitoring process. This study puts forward design proposals for a project-based translation class with a blended-learning approach. It first identifies the problems caused by novice translators in the postgraduate course. They tend to experience difficulties in giving unity in the target text in terms of terminology and document format. Based on the analysis, online and onsite activities for a project-based translation class are proposed. The theoretical framework is derived from Thorne (2003); blended learning resources are selected among the ones available at the authors’ school.
