A Study on Chinese Character-Korean Translation of Cause and Effect in the Text of the Diamond Sutra

This research focuses on analysis of the Chinese character-Korean translation of the phrases of cause and effect in the text of the Diamond Sutra. The background of research comes from the reason why there were no translation researches on this topic until now. As a result of analysis, this research offers four models: the cause-effect and the effect-cause structures, and the forward- and the backward-direction word orders. At first, the structures of the cause-effect and the effect-cause and the forward-direction word order in the target language showed the same structures and word order with the source language. But only the backward-direction word order in the source language did not match with the target language. It is caused by the differences of feature and system between the two languages. It also implies that the flow of thought about the cause and effect meanings in the sentences is more expanded than the lexical meanings themselves. Through this result, this research suggests that translators need to consider thoughts in the language itself in the Buddhist scripture translation.
