A Study on the Shift Phenomenon in the English-Korean Translation of 2nd Person Pronoun You and Address Terms

This study aims to show the translation shift of the English second person pronoun you in various discourse situations. While English uses one form of you regardless of social relationship between addresser(s) and addressee(s), Korean has more than one second person pronominal forms. Most Korean second person pronouns are not polite enough for older people and are therefore inappropriate. Because the use of pronouns is very limited in Korean, the English you requires shifting into the appropriate address terms considering the relationship between addresser(s) and addressee(s), namely the discourse tenor . Getting the tenor of discourse right in translation depends on degrees of formality. Korean address terms are influenced by power such as age and social status, whereas in English, intimacy takes precedence. The different address system between Korean and English is usually motivated by formal/informal discourse tenor and specific situations. Korean has more complicated hierarchy for second person pronouns and address terms than English does.
