Amplification Strategies for Dubbing Translation

This paper investigates amplification strategies for dubbing translation that lengthens the text to synchronize with the actors’ speech on screen. A qualitative analysis was conducted to compare the Korean dubbed translation of ‘Frozen’, a blockbuster musical animation that was a huge hit worldwide as well as in Korea, with the original and subtitled version. The author found ten amplification strategies and categorized them into two groups; lexical addition and style variation. The analysis focuses on the appropriate strategies to prolong the text, and demonstrates how the resources of Korean lexis and style can be utilized to form a relevant dubbed dialogue. The creative solution of each rendition illustrates that the dubbing translation is a continuous choice-making process in which the text-maker must produce an optimal version that is considerate of isochrony.
