The Role and Types of Paratexts in Translation - on the Basis of Korean Translations of the Brothers Karamazov

This paper purports to study various kinds of paratexts in translations and investigates the role of translators. Paratexts, proposed by Gérard Genette, include peripheral texts to translations, such as titles, footnotes, prefaces, postfaces, added in the translation process. Comparing various kinds of translations of The brothers Karamazov, written by Dostoevski, this paper analyzes different types of paratexts, used in Korean translations, and focuses on a role or a voice of translators. For the study, 8 kinds of translations were collected and 6 kinds of paratexts were analyzed. Paratexts can play a role in understanding and accepting a text by readers. This paper aims to show how different kinds of paratexts influence the reception of a text, why these paratexts were chosen, and further what kind of relationships could be found between types of paratexts and the role of translators.
