With the ever-diversifying needs for translation services along with increasing demand for translation training at undergraduate level, the present study paid attention to the importance of bringing up competent translators not only with linguistic but also with extra-linguistic or problem-solving capabilities. As the first step, strategic and instrumental subcompetences, key requirements for problem-solving, of undergraduate students with different level of exposure to translation training were reviewed using “Translation Procedure Behavior Pattern Analysis Tool” by PACTE Group and a survey was conducted on translation problems and strategies adopted during the translation task. The results of the analysis revealed that there was little difference between experienced and beginner students in terms of utilizing their instrumental subcompetence while the two groups showed a clear difference in mobilizing their strategic subcompetence.
