Translation of Food-related Culture Specific References in Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone

Translators encounter great difficulties and challenges when translating the cultural aspects of a text especially concerning culture-specific references. The aim of this study is to define and analyze the concept of culture-specific references. The paper first gives a short overview of the concept of culture-specific references and describes the different translation techniques applied in the Korean translation of the world-famous children’s book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Sone. The translator is faced with a dilemma of whether to ‘foreignise’ or to ‘domesticate’ such items and devises various strategies to overcome the gaps and distances between the source text and the target text. This study focuses on food-related items in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and examines what kind of strategies the translator adopted to translate these problems in translation.
