Jonathan Edwards’ View of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

This study examines Jonathan Edwards’ view of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Edwards who successfully led First Great Awakening had many chances to experience the work of the Holy Spirit and divine grace in his whole life. However, his view of the gifts of the Holy Spirit was so closed to cessationism. In his times, Edwards especially refused the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Spirit such as prophesy, glossolalia and supernatural miracles. He argued that the extraordinary gifts had been limited to Apostles’ age. The main reason behind Edwards’ argument was to go against the radical New Lights that criticized the authority of pastors and made churches splits in the First Great Awakening. Moreover, Edwards points out that the extraordinary gifts have no salvific effect on human nature. This study would offer beneficial theological view to Korean Church that has serious conflicts over the discussions on the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
