Philosophize with a Hammer, Translate with a Hammer - Domesticating Translation with Reference to Nietzsche and Venuti

This study aims to discuss the questions of fluent and domesticating translation by drawing on the notion of genealogical approach proposed by Nietzsche and later adopted by Venuti. First, this research explored the common ground shared by Nietzsche and Venuti as to the inherently ethnocentric nature of translation. The second discussion was engaged with the genealogical approach to translation in general and fluent translation in particular. Nietzsche put forth the insight that translation, with its domesticating strategies, was being mobilized for cultural and political agendas in Germany. Venuti, on the other hand, argues that a genealogical analysis of translation can help resist the regime of fluent strategies, calling for the heighten sense of responsibility and ethics from translators. Translation which enables the source text to emerge undamaged with its uniqueness into the target culture, he believes, truly resists ethnocentricism in translation.
