The Comparison between Chinese and English Proverbs and their Translation Criteria

Proverbs are popular sayings that contain advice and state a generally accepted truth. They are deep in meaning and rich in rhyme. Translation, is intercultural communication in the essence. The ultimate purpose of translation is to promote the cross-cultural exchange. This paper illustrated that the English-Chinese or Chinese-English proverb translation involves not only the transfer of language but also the transmission of culture background, historical background, religion, thinking method and implied meanings. This paper also aimed at proposing criteria of English proverb translation in detail.
