A Corpus-Based Approach to LB Translation Education

This paper explores translation into one s non-mother tongue, or LB (LB translation), as a marked case of translation . This study is based on the recognition that there exists only a paucity of research on this topic even though LB translation is already a norm in Korea. If LB translation is inevitable, although not desirable, as deplored by some scholars/practitioners, systematic relevant research should be conducted and accumulated so that an ideal model can be devised, thus helping enhancing the general level of LB translation practice. Driven by an academic need to analyze LB translation, this paper will be composed of five segments. Firstly, two different attitudes pertaining to LB translation will be briefly sketched. Secondly, a research design will be introduced which enables one to draw contrasts between LA and LB translation in terms of translators translational behaviors related to translated text expansion rates. Translation text expansion rate is a statistical tool with which to track length changes between ST and TT. The distribution of translated text expansion rate means, by translator, will be compared between LA and LB translations, using a scatterplot analysis, and the findings will be summarized and discussed. In conclusion, employing authentic language usage data in a corpus-based approach to translation education in general and LB translation in particular will be proposed as an effective way to address the endemic problems plaguing LB translations.
