Obstacles to University Students Interpretation by First Language Influences

Interpretation can be said to be a process of transforming the source language to the target language, based on cultural, linguistic, and world knowledge. In this process, the interpreter inevitably makes a lot of errors. In particular, many errors are caused by cultural differences or direct translation, without understanding the difference of the morphological properties of the two languages. All of these are first language influences, which pose obstacles to interpretation. L2 learners show personal differences, depending on their age, aptitude, cognitive system, motives, and characteristics. In particular, learners motives and needs have played the most important role in the theories of second language learning. If students are trained to promptly transform the source language to the target language in interpretation classes, they will be forced to actively speak and hence can be greatly motivated for L2 learning. Also, if the instructor explains the cultural backgrounds of Korea and English-speaking countries to reduce the number of errors occurring from cultural differences or direct translation, and emphasize the difference of the morphological properties of each language, I believe that students will be able to acquire a correct linguistic knowledge of the target language, not just memorizing the meaning and sound of each word.
