학습자와 교수자의 요구분석을 통한 대학영어 프로그램 커리큘럼 개발 방안 모색 연구

A Study on the Perceived Needs of Students, NESTs and NNESTs Concerning GELP Curricula Development

본 연구는 대학교양 영어 프로그램 (GELP)에 대한 대학생들의 인식 요구를 조사하고, 동시에 원어민 영어 교수자 (NEST)와 영어가 모국어가 아닌 교수자 (NNEST)의 인식 요구 사항을 비교하여 GELP 자체의 향후 발전 방향을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 주로 학생을 대상으로 한 설문조사에만 초점을 두어 왔던 기존의 연구와는 달리, 본 연구에서는총 318 명의 한국 학생과 49명의 원어민 영어교수자 및 내국인교수자가 참여하였다. 교수 자와 학생의 의견을 모두 수렴한 총괄적인 연구 접근방식을 사용한 본 연구에서 학생들과 강사 모두 GELP에 대해 비슷한 견해를 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 모든 그룹의 참여자들은 학생들의 의사소통 능력 향상 이 대학 교양영어프로그램의 학습 목표가 되어야하며 “네 가지 언어 영역 모두를 향상”시키는 것이 프로그램의 주된 고려 사항이 되어야 한다고 주장하였다. 또한 학생들과 교수자 모두, GELP 수업을 통해 학생들의 소통 능력을 향상시 키는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 활동에 중점을 두어야한다고 생각하였으며, 이를 위하여 4년제 대학 기간 동안 적어도 4학기 이상의 수업이 필요하다고 주장하였다. 다시 말해 학생과 교수 모두 ‘기초대인의사소통능력’ (BICS)을 향상시키는 것이 GELP의 주요 목적이 되어야 하며 GELP안에서 학생들이 다른 세계 문화를 경험하며 동시에 영어 능력을 개발할 수 있는 충분한 기회가 제공해야한다고 생각하였다.

The purpose of this study was to examine university students’ perceived needs and compare them with the perceived needs of native English speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English speaking teachers (NNESTs) concerning a general English language program (GELP). A total of 318 Korean students and 49 instructors participated in the study, and they were asked to complete a questionnaire. It took one semester long in collecting data, and they were analyzed in the following semester. The study’s findings indicated that both groups asserted that “improving students’ communicative abilities” should be the learning objective of a GELP, and that enhancing all four skill areas should be the main consideration in the program. Additionally, both groups believed that classes should focus on activities that could help the students enhance their communicative competence, and preferred four semesters of instruction to be carried out over the four year university period. In brief, both students and professors believed that improving basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) should be the main purpose in a GELP, and that ample opportunities should be made available for students to develop their English language abilities while simultaneously exploring different world cultures.
