A Study of the problems of metaphor in translation on the basis of functional equivalence

Metaphor is not merely a device of poetic imagination and rhetorical flourish, but is pervasive in everyday life. Metaphor raises a serious translation problem because of its non-literalness and culture-orientedness. Metaphor also has its specific function, emphasizing the original meaning, enhancing expressiveness and pursuasive strength. Therefore, those who translate metaphor inevitably face with the problem, how to maintain the function and impact of ST metaphoric expressions in TT. This paper discusses the problems of metaphor in translation on the basis of functional equivalence between ST and TT.
