The purpose of this paper is to present briefly two major figures, metonymy and synecdoche, and to show how we can translate them while preserving together their sense and form of expression. A metonymy is a trope where one entity stands for another associated entity. A synecdoche is a kind of metonymy where a part stands for the whole. In this study, we intend to determine the type of process involved when an interpreter or translator tries to find an appropriate solution. Context, situation and cognitive elements play an important role in the phase of comprehension. For re-expression, the translator must take care of connotations and implicit meanings of the figure. The translator is advised to find an expression which can express the same meaning with an equivalent linguistic form. Finally, our focus should be less on translating each single figure as such than on considering the text in its whole and making sure that the global equivalence between ST and TT is realized.
