Reading is a legitimate subject matter of academic research in Translation Studies in two aspects. First, reading is the process whereby the translator not only starts her professional endeavor but also acquires the comprehension of the source text (ST), which is a prerequisite for the subsequent translating process. Second, the level of the translator s comprehension of the ST unquestionably influences the quality of the end-product of the translating process. Despite all these factors, there has been a paucity of research into this field thus far. This article, a case study report of a seasoned professional translator employing in-depth interviews, is basically a response to the recognized need for further research. The first segment of the article contrasts the theory regarding general reading by the ordinary, non-translator readership to professional reading by translators. Different reading strategies and intervening factors are briefly discussed. The second segment is devoted to introducing and discussing the research design: the questionnaire to be used, the way the in-depth interviews were conducted, and the interviewee, among many other topics. The findings will be introduced and discussed in the third segment. The conclusion will summarize the structure, limitations, and implications of this research.
