The general attention to the quality of conference interpreting developed in the 1970s. However, What do the recipients of interpretation mean by “good interpretation”? Obviously, the users want “good” interpretation, but what do they mean by good interpretation? In training interpretation, quality assessment essentially differs from assessment in the field due to its guiding function and to the importance it allocates to the interpreting process as opposed to the quality of the product. Potential discrepancies between the instructors norms and market norms are not fundamentally problematic as long as they reflect higher standards in the training environment rather than differences in interpretation strategies and norms. Many surveys aimed at establishing whether participants have very different expectations when attending meetings of a different type. Clarity of expression, completeness, and terminology remain the same in the absolute majority of cases. The findings confirm the validity of the theories that view translation and interpretation as an intercultural communication process and emphasize the importance of situationality and communicative context. They clearly show that the target-language receiver or listener must be seen as an essential element in the process.
