Similar to translating for the television, translating for the radio requires the translator to achieve communication within a limited delivery time. However, radio translation may encounter more constraints in that the channel of delivery is confined to sound only. In the absence of images or videos, translators may face more difficulties to effectively communicate intended meanings. In particular, radio news coverage includes various domestic and foreign issues on a daily basis. Such poses a huge burden on news translators who not only have to creatively overcome the “untranslatable” elements under time constraint but also are forced to complete the translation ready for the pre-set broadcast schedules. As a result, translators face the constant need to make decisions to choose the strategies for the efficient use of time. Among problems emerging in the process of translating Korean-Arabic news texts, this paper focuses on the investigation of various strategies used by the translators in dealing with abbreviations and acronyms (or verbatim words). Whereas it is common to see the abbreviations in Korean source texts, it is a challenge to identify corresponding Arabic expressions of them since the use of abbreviations and acronyms is not only rare in Arabic, but it is also difficult to provide the abbreviations in the Arabic language due to the characteristics of the language.
