The purpose of the present study is to demonstrate that the translation of a metaphor most succinctly points to the very nature of translation as an act of communication between different cultures as well as the process of decision-making by the translator. Metaphors, as a special way of rendering meanings in a non-literal and implicit way, either emphasize the intended meaning of the expression or enhance the corresponding expression. Having been forged over time through complex interaction among referents, images or schemas, as well as the senses involved, metaphors are inevitably influenced by the culture or the language of the speech community they belong to. Consequently, those who translate metaphors are faced with the question of (1) how to deal with both the form and the meaning of the source text (ST) segment containing metaphoric expressions in such a way as to preserve its intended function and effect in the target text (TT), and (2) how to effectively and adequately render the cultural factors involved. Against this backdrop, this dissertation strives to delve into the issue of translating metaphors for readers with cultural backgrounds that are different from the ST readers.
