This paper discusses the appropriateness of technical terms in order to achieve communication inside and outside a given field. By reviewing technical terms translated from English into Korean and used in psycho-analysis and measurement fields, the paper emphasized the importance of the first translation and the responsibility of the first translator. Translated technical terms should obey the one-to-one correspondence between concept and term for communication among specialists in a given fields. The Korean technical term ‘hakseup’ in psycho-analysis, translated from ‘learning’, should be ‘haengdong byeonhwa(behavior change)’ or ‘baneung(reaction)’. because a conditioned reflex cannot be referred to as ‘learning’. The technical terms should also obey the word-formation rules in the target language for communication between the given field and other general fields. The technical term ‘jojeung’ in psycho-analysis from the English word ‘manic disorder’, should be introduced as ‘jogeupjeong’, while the term ‘bulhwakdo’(uncertainty of measurement) should be translated as ‘bulhwaksildo’ or ‘bulhwakjeongdo.’
