This paper focuses on investigating metaphor translation in subtitling. Metaphor is an important element in conveying messages because figurative expressions like metaphor include more exact meanings than routine expressions. As an analysis result of this research on English-Korean subtitles of two films; Midnight in Paris(2011) and Eat Pray Love(2010), metaphors, as Newmark(1981: 88) insisted, assume the forms reproducing the similar image in the TL. and include expressions, such as simile, simile plus sense, and replacement. This research can observe that non-metaphors in the SL are transferred into metaphors in the TL to convey meanings of SL more explicitly. Despite cultural gaps and linguistic structure differences between SL and TL, metaphors in subtitling are literally transferred mostly. Unlike literary translation, subtitling usually has the characteristics that the image and sound information are added. However, from the analysis results of this research, such traces were not founded in conveying the meanings of metaphor. This result can be different depending on film genres and has a necessity to examine other genres about metaphoric translations.
