This thesis addresses the phenomenon in which translation education is expanding in undergraduate and graduate courses in Korea. In particular, the number of courses dealing with literary translation is increasing. The thesis sets forth two ways to improve literary translation education. One concerns the perception of literary translation education and the other, development of literary translation education methods. Certainly, pervasive sub-standard translated literary works can be remedied through improved literary translation education in higher education. In particular, three main areas of teaching translation can be the focus of enhancement: instrumental sub-competence(skills to search for literature concerning translation); translation knowledge sub-competence(knowledge about translation process and methods and ability to judge translation practice); and strategic sub-competence(ability relating to resolving translation problems and the efficiency of translation process). To that end, it is necessary to develop textbooks and courses and education methods that help cultivate students in these competence areas. More fundamentally, professors with experience in literary translation, students with zeal for literary education and bilingual proficiency and the educational institutions should be in place for the desired improvement to be effectively made. The thesis presents such a vision through an example of ‘Academy of Korean Literary Translation.’
