This paper has entered into the wider purpose to ascertain the viewpoint or empathy as the basic factor underlying the differences between English and Korean, and furthermore to find out the proper way to satisfy requirements in the translation from English into Korean. We have surveyed and compared the general usages of reflexive pronouns in English and Korean. The important difference revealed is as follows: While it shows the co-referentiality of the subject and object in English, it gives the viewpoint of the speaker and hearer into the animate beings referred to by that reflexive pronoun in Korean. Second, while it cannot go over the clause boundary in English, it can go over into even another sentence in Korean. Therefore, the translator may introduce reflexive pronouns, on condition the viewpoint of description should not be changed, even though the corresponding nouns are expressed as general pronouns, not reflexive pronouns. We have performed the same processes in analyzing the negative-interrogatives of the two, as applied to the reflexive pronoun category. The important difference revealed is that the answerer replies affirmatively or negatively according to the questioner s attitude towards the given message in Korean, while the answerer does according to truth or falsity of the given message in English. Therefore, the translator uses the strategy to express affirmatively, contrary to the English original mode or negatively contrary to the English.
