Stylistics in the Subtitles

This paper focuses on the stylistics in subtitles and how stylistics changes under temporal and spatial restrictions. The materials in this paper are mainly limited to the target text, Korean. In translation studies, stylistics refers to the style of individual writings. Therefore stylistics can depend on the writer s discretion and personality. On the other hand, styles in respect of audiovisual translation appears in implicative, explicit, and condensed expressions. The analysis results indicate that there are, in general, five styles in the target text, Korean. First, subtitlers prefer a colloquial style. Second, subtitles are in a concise style. Third, subtitlers do not obey the rules of the Korean orthography. Fourth, the styles of subtitles vary with the actors role relations in the movie. Fifth, the styles of subtitles also vary with situations in the movie. Based on the results above, this paper concludes that styles in the target text, Korean, generally transfers the messages in styles that improve acceptability and understandability for the target audience or target culture. But the results of this paper cannot be generalized because styles can be different depending on film genres.
